The Freedom of the Open Range
Boondocking—also known as dry camping, dispersed camping, or wild camping—is the practice of camping in an RV without any utility hookups (no water, electricity, or sewer). It’s the ultimate way to escape crowded RV parks, connect with nature, and save money.
While it sounds intimidating at first, with a little preparation, boondocking can become your favorite way to camp.
1. Finding the Perfect Spot
Most boondocking in the United States occurs on public land managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) or the US Forest Service (USFS).
- Apps to Use: Campendium, iOverlander, and FreeCampsites.net are invaluable resources.
- Rule of Thumb: Always read recent reviews to ensure the access roads are suitable for your specific RV size and weight.
2. Managing Your Fresh Water
Water is usually the limiting factor for how long you can boondocking.
- Navy Showers: Turn the water on to get wet, off to soap up, and on again to rinse.
- Paper Plates: Minimizing dishwashing saves a huge amount of fresh water.
3. Power Management
Without a 30-amp pedestal, you rely on your RV house batteries.
- Solar Panels: A couple of roof-mounted solar panels can keep your batteries topped off during sunny days.
- Generator Etiquette: If running a generator, respect quiet hours (usually 10 PM to 6 AM) and keep it as far away from neighbors as possible.
Remember the golden rule of boondocking: Leave No Trace. Always pack out what you pack in, and leave the wilderness cleaner than you found it.
